Mask 2
Mask 2
Material: Hand-Cast Plaster
Mask 2 is part of the Masks collection which delves into the complex symbolism of masks as vehicles of identity. In this series, I investigate masks in their capacity to celebrate cultural heritage and their role as shields behind which identities are hidden. Through this, I reflect on my experience as a gay Jewish man concealing my identity in a society that often demands conformity.
Mask 2 references feminine characteristics such as earrings, dimples and the Madonna mole. This relief wall sculpture suggests rebirth and an aspiration towards a bright future. However, the mask remains a boundary that presents a tension between masks as celebratory objects and as tools of concealment.
Reliefs are sculptures with a flat surface. Because of their flat surface, reliefs can be displayed as wall sculptures. The reliefs are made from plaster sourced locally in England. Mask 2 measures 30x24 cm and is available in various colours to suit different spaces. The relief is an exclusive edition of 10 reliefs. It is recommended to frame the relief with a 25-30mm margin to enhance its presence. This spacing allows the piece to breathe and emphasizes its unique edges. Please note that the framing is not included in the original price. If you would like the piece framed please contact me at hello@yocadesign.co.uk

Sculpted from plaster, the relief's smooth surface underscores the purity of form with an interplay of light and shadow echoing the architectural practice that inspires my work. The sculpted composition is a delicate balance between abstract and figurative, capturing the essence of a mask without revealing a specific identity. This ambiguity invites viewers to contemplate the tension between visibility and invisibility, celebration, and concealment.
