Beyond Blueprints

Beyond Blueprints

The collaboration with Gubns has inspired me to investigate my relief sculptures further. As such, I will be exhibiting three reliefs in the Beyond Blueprints exhibition: Flowing Centre, Mask 1, and Dancing Balconies. I will also present an exclusive edition of the Ora Premium Table Lamp with a brown hand-cast plaster base. I am looking forward to continuing to collaborate with the team at Gubns and of course the Beyond Blueprints exhibition.

Join us on September 20th at 17:00 to say hello and meet the other architect-makers who are exhibiting, hear the stories behind our creations and browse limited-edition pieces, available exclusively through Gubns.

Gubns chose the brief Beyond Blueprints, challenging architect-makers to consider how their architectural background has informed their craft and more specifically how the act of drawing in 2D has inspired or influenced their artwork in 3D.

My response to the brief articulated how my sculpting approach is informed by my architectural background. I start by sketching plans, informed by spatial compositions or abstract figures that inspire me. After, I draw sections that determine the different heights and relationships between each surface. Later, I consolidate the plans and sections in the form of a relief or a lamp.

I craft the reliefs through a series of both traditional and contemporary techniques. I use CNC to prepare the initial mould. This mould is vacuumed to create a second, more refined mould. I cast plaster into the mould and then sand it meticulously. The relief titled Dancing Balconies is a series of four reliefs that explore the relationship between drawing and sculpture. They present different spatial configurations by abstracting an architectural element.

The reliefs and lamps are intertwined. Often, I would sketch and cast a relief which would later inform the design of a lampshade. The Ora lamp is inspired by Dancing Balconies. Both have dynamic appearances from different angles. The illumination of Ora adds another dimension to the practice of sculpting.
